Audition Notice for ‘One Stoplight Town’

Set in a small Manitoba town that gets its first stoplight in 1989, One Stoplight Town follows the lives of its residents over several years, how things change, and how things stay the same. A one-act production as part of a double bill with An Seanchaí.
Performance Dates
5 performances over four days, from Thursday January 23 to Sunday January 26 at the Irish Association of Manitoba.
List of Roles
Tom/Trish - Any, 30s-40s - 5 scenes, 58 lines - Local handyperson in charge of fixing and maintaining the town’s stoplight. Voice of wisdom and reason, relaxed, goes with the flow and adapts to the world changing.
Bob/Barb - Any, 40s-60s - 2 scenes, 40 lines - Local grocer and member of the town council. Cantankerous, stuck in the past, and afraid of change.
Jim - Male, 20s-30s - 4 scenes, 53 lines - Starts as a class clown and high school senior in 1996 with hidden insecurities. Dates and marries Sally, becomes a father, and sees his daughter Emma off to college. Contains scenes of intimacy.
Sally - Female, 20s-30s - 3 scenes, 48 lines - Starts as a nerdy straight-A student in 1996 with a sarcastic wit. Dates and marries Jim, becomes a mother, and sees her daughter Emma off to college. Contains scenes of intimacy.
Emma - Female, 20s-30s - 2 scenes, 19 lines - Jim and Sally’s daughter. A zoomer. Helps a couple boys conduct a race in 2017. Goes to college in the present day. Contains possible intimacy.
Boyfriend, Photographer - Male, 20s-30s - 3 scenes, 21 lines - Emma’s boyfriend. Competes with his rival in a race in 2017. Says goodbye to Emma when she goes to college. Contains possible intimacy.
Rival, Officer - Male, 20s-30s - 2 scenes, 31 lines - The boyfriend’s rival in the race in 2017. A zoomer. Grows up to become one of the town’s police officers.
Youth - Male, 20s-30s - 3 scenes, 19 lines - Recurring background character representing what’s popular with The Youth in 1989, 2003, and 2017. Friends with the rival.
Casey - Female, 20s-30s - 4 scenes, 29 lines - Teen/young adult considered different or strange in earlier decades by several townsfolk due to her neurodivergence (Autism and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) making it difficult for her to cross the street.
Runaway - Female, 20s-30s - 2 scenes, 51 lines - Isolated and misunderstood teen from 2010 who feels alone, trapped, and like she doesn’t belong. Planning to run away from home and go to the city. Into several fandoms.
Prodigal Son - Male, 30s-40s - 1 scene, 54 lines - Man who ran away from the town as a teen who has come back home after having lived in the city for several years.

Auditions are being held on Saturday, September 21st starting at 1:00 PM and Monday, September 23rd starting at 7:00 PM at the First Mennonite Church of Winnipeg, 922 Notre Dame Avenue.
